This topic is for sharing your idea of a good mountain

There is no universally accepted definition of a mountain. Elevation, volume, relief, steepness, spacing and continuity has been used as criteria for defining a mountain(www)

Any tricks on making them?
What kind of paint do you use and how do you use it?
How do you make the terrain?

please share your idea`s  Smiley

Not much experience in making mountains yet that`s why i started this topic...

I like the use of woodland mountain rock in combination whit jungle dense underbrush and have seen it used in a lot of good maps.

For the terrain i just start whit setting it to a height first and then ramp it all down to give it volume...
And then use the erosion tool whit light brushes to give it relief...

Then i paint the relief that shows up whit the woodland mountain rock and the land slides whit the jungle dense underbrush...

All I do when creating mountains and what not is use the noise tool at different strengths where I want my mountain to be and then smooth it down afterwards and voila....one lump of terrain, lol. What I've alway's wanted to make is a mountain with a winding pathway going around it with cave systems throughout, unfortunately I lack the talent and patience to pull it off.  Sad

One mountain I'd love to see re-created would be mount Chiliad from San Andreas, that'd be coool.  Grin

....a big point and a hole in my case...LOL

That sounds like a great way to do it Robeir....i stept off the noise tool for making mountains because i just make big points whit it......

I generally don't use the noise tool - I find it's too unpredictable (but maybe that's a good thing for others lol)

I usually create a large bump or two, then I use the erosion tool - this is less severe than the noise tool, and it's more pleasing on the eye....well my eyes anyway. I think it looks more natural, but maybe using the noise tool with reduced severity combined with the erosion tool would work well.

When painting, I usually use the constraints settings in the brush options, it makes it a lot easier, and minimal touching up is required.
I like the desert rock paint mostly, and to get a 'snow-capped' look, I use a sand paint - still sand usually.

I'm sure these are all well known techniques, but these are my usual methods, and I think they look pretty cool Smiley

i tried using it a few times but don`t had any good use from it so far...
it seems it stops painting all together when i use it.....

 Huh? Huh?

You should set constraints on and set minimum slope to 30. Don't change anything else and start painting the rock texture on the mountains.

That way it'll only paint that texture on slopes with a 30 degree incline or more. That works for most mountains.
Smiley

Use that and the add noise tool set to maximum radius and strength and you'll have impressive looking mountains with almost no effort. Just in case anyone ever though I was really good at terrain, I'm not, I just do this mainly. lol

never to old 2 learn..... Tongue

Yep, the constraints are really handy - you can set it for height aswell btw yoz, but as Neg said it's easier to set the slope angle.

The noise tool is pretty intense, so after working out a shape with it on a low setting, i'll usually soften out the points to imply erosion. Then pick the erosion tool for landslides.  I've noticed in most mtns where i live there's a common pattern, high crevice that descends into a landslide.

Setting the texture to 50% or less and overlap another texture where they meet will give a smooth transitions to peaks, timberlines, landslides and roadsides.  I also use the raise tool to accent the implied shapes in most of the textures.
