Think: what type of map is your skill set worst at making? What would be the most difficult to make? Make that. Cheesy

Or how about, what map do you least like to play? Big maps, vehicle-heavy maps, whatever? Make that type of map and see if you can make it in such a way that you really like it. Cheesy

I try to think of what might be the least likely thing that would ever be in the Dunia engine. Then I try to make it.

I turn making maps into a challenge for me, it's more interesting that way.

Map designs are difficult to come up with I agree, and everyone has different ideas of what makes a decent map.
As we all know, the main thing that limits us is Far Cry 2 itself, both in resources and the items available.

Often a bit of time off can work wonders, if I run out of ideas, a couple of days off usually jarrs something loose lol and I'm back to mapping again. Cheesy

I'll throw a few of my ideas around - hopefully they might give you some ideas Wink

I personally like architectural maps, with lots of custom structures, or just one big one. I also like to recreate scenes from my favorite movies too.
Occasionally I attempt both - an architectural map based on a movie.

I also like to recreate famous landmarks too, as accurately as the game allows, although my landmark maps don't play that well, I just like making them to look pretty  Wink (although that's a matter of opinion lol)

I've seen many maps that recreate levels from other games, while some of these are very good, I find that unless the look of the game matches the brushes in Far Cry 2, then it tends not to look that great.
I've been playing a bit of Red Dead Redemption, and some of those areas would match ok, but it's mostly rocky deserts and cliffs etc. The buildings are quite interesting though. It might be worth a try to make a map based on one of the forts, or maybe one of the small towns.

An idea I've just had - what about a map contained inside a giant PC. All the internals would be there eg. Hard Drive, Motherboard, RAM strips, CPU cooler, Power Supply etc. It would be like an urban style, close quarter map.
Oversized maps have been created before, but I'm not sure if a giant PC has been done, maybe it has, but it still sounds pretty interesting Smiley

I have a map that has been sitting there for a while, waiting for some inspiration, it is a giant, vertical spiral, with a globe at the top and bottom.
I have called it 'Uzumaki' (Spirals) after a Japanese film of the same name. It doesn't have anything to do with the film, except the name.
I don't really know where I'm going with it, but if you want we could complete it as a co-op project, maybe you can come up with something - I would really like to get it finished, it's quite unusual.
I designed the spiral as part of an experiment into designing odd and unusual shapes - I've got a giant apple map and a huge vase map too lol, they are all sitting there waiting for ideas, not sure if they'll get any though Tongue

I'm sure none of these ideas are original, but it's all about the details - that's what makes a normal map great in my opinion.

Good luck, I hope you get some inspiration soon, I'm sure you will Smiley

oh and also, thanks neg. maby i can make a bridge map. because i hate those things to hell. i think the only one i like was the recent one made by maxpower. but most of the time bridge maps make me turn away in disgust( im trying to show my dislike against bridge maps in general. i do not think the idea, or anyone elses map is ugly and such).

It seems I am now in the same boat as you lol, I have no idea what to do with it unfortunately, all I have is one big spiral with a big globe at each end lol - now that I think about it, it's going to be tricky to get it validated for all modes, DM, TDM and maybe CTD would be ok, but uprising would be a problem I think.

It is a small map, and it's completely in the air. There would be a team base at each end globe. There are windows/gaps all the way down from top to bottom on the inside edge of the spiral, so that when you're moving up or down, players on the opposite side could see you, and vica-versa. Maybe some machine gun turrets could be placed along these openings.
I'm not sure what sort of obstacles could be placed to make it more challenging - at the moment it's running up in spiral, or running down in a spiral lol.
I haven't thought about vehicles, it might be a bit tight in the spiral, but maybe the buggy.
I haven't thought about the interior of the globes - there's some room for creativity there I think.
Other than these, I haven't had many other thoughts, I'm waiting for something to pop into my head, it could be a long wait lol.

I thought a fresh pair of eyes might see something else in it  Wink I would gladly hand it over to you tomorrow evening if you're about, maybe we could exchange maps, I could have a look at one of your unfinished layouts aswell Smiley

I have to catch some zzz now though, but I will look out for you tomorrow Smiley

You could build something in space. To do that you would have to make the level realy high up, occlusion block the terrain & set the time to night.

Yeah, like my "Infinite Void" map. Or something during the day like my "Harmonic discord." don't worry, I don't know what it's supposed to be either. I really wish I could've put the clouds below the map. Smiley
