My PS3 died today, red flashing light. Trying things to fix it now, but may not be able to playtest tonight.

I had that to.. try holding the on/off button till you hear 3 beeps, it should reset your ps3 to default settings.. u lose all your saved data but your PS3 works again!

(It might not work, its 50/50, it worked for me tho)

Nope its a f#*&ing brick now...fan spins up for a few then quits. Re-seated HDD, nothing. Can't get my game back out either. Sony wants $150 to send it in then send me a refurb back...not too sure about that. This is an original 20GB I had upgraded the to 160GB. I read the PS forums and this is happening to more and more of the original release systems. Debating on just picking up an 80GB and getting a 3yr warranty. Play testing will be delayed.

Oh no.  Hurry and get a shop vac on it.  I shop vac mine out around once a month.  It has been going since January of last year.  Anytime it starts to freeze too much I clean it out and it runs like new.

Well I bit the bullet and picked up the 80GB today with the 2yr warranty. Still lost all my data, but I ordered a ext enclosure for a 2.5" HDD from newegg today and hoping I can recover it at some point. I should be back on tonight...

So you bought a new one huh?

Did you try to clean out the old one or did something get fried?

You know you can still send it back to Sony and get it refurbished or replaced (depending on condition) for only $150 plus shipping right?

Just glad to hear that you don't have to be gone for long.

Yeah I kept it cleaned out, it was completely fried. I chose not to send it back to Sony yet, just to get a refurb with no guarantee. I'm going to try to recover the data then may try to fix it myself. Oh...and I still need to get my FC2 out of the drive.

if it happens to anyone else here and you have a game stuck in the machine, I figured out a simple trick to getting the game out which is probably listed in the manual somewhere but I bought mine of ebay and it didn't come with one. With the power switch turned OFF, hold down the eject button and keep it held whilst switching the power switch on. After a few seconds the PS3 will blast out it's fans and the game will eject. Huge relief to me as it was Far Cry 2.

Hopefully this will help...

The kind of vacuum that you would see at a car wash, but smaller.  You can vacuum water with it if you wanted too.

KOOL! I just brush the visible dust away when it over-heats keeps it ticking over just fine.

DNS ERROR HELP.

I recently discovered, through my short temper a way to kill of DNS errors

1.If it says it cant connect to server, just keep trying, relentlessly. it should eventually log you in.
(this can also work for games on fc2 you cant join)
2.If that doesn't work turn it off at the switch ON THE PS3 for a while.Whack it back on try again.
3.Still no joy? then repeat step 1. if that STILL doesn't work then turn it off at the main switch ON THE WALL then come back in 10mins, try again, 20mins, try again etc. etc.

Oh and by the way...MAKE SURE YOUR INTERNET IS ON...

hope this helps,
