The game industry's annual showcase got underway today. Watched the EA and Ubisoft presentations, and there are some very cool games coming up. I will update this thread with some game info and trailers.
The main push so far seems to be the motion tools available now for all the platforms. Microsoft hit it hard with the Kinect camera they are marketing, and Sony is up tomorrow with the Move. I question the strategy here, because I don't see these motion things as anything more than a novelty. I never considered Wii the future of gaming, but evidently the big boys do. We have a Wii, but I have no idea where it is...maybe my 9 yr old knows.
EA - Overall, great games and presentation. Much to look forward to...they own nearly everything now anyways. At least they are sticking with strong titles, this was a real meat and potatoes session. Alot of the game demos were PS3, so it's good to know they felt they were the best video for the presentation. EA is like the New York Yankees, just spending whatever it takes to acquire the best available.
EA Press conference videoUbisoft - What a disappointment this presentation was...if EA was meat and potatoes, this was a side salad. This company seems to have no concept of who their fans are or what they want (go figure). They seem to be abandoning the hardcore gamer demographic that made them what they are today, and embracing the Wii crowd. The marketing strategy seems like it was developed about 3 yrs ago...by the Public Broadcasting Service.
To top it off, the presentation seemed clumsy and unrehearsed. Joel McHale (E! Talk Soup) hosted, and although I find him funny usually, he obviously found out he was doing this about 5 minutes before it started. It was painful to watch. No mention of Far Cry, Rainbow 6, or any solid FPS games. Obviously the French suck so bad at fighting they have given up on it completely.
Ubi Press conference videoMicrosoft - Debuted the Kinect camera (formerly Natal), which is the motion device for xsux360. Demo'd dance and fitness games that use the technology...meh. Xsux360 slim....LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. I would give you more feedback on this presentation but honestly, I fell asleep in my chair watching it. I guess watching all that exercising made me sleepy.
MS Press conference videoNintendo - I would call this a success if you are into the gameplay that the Wii, DS, and the all new 3DS offers. Alot of cool titles including a new Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong country, and Kirby adventure. Also saw a Mario Sports game, and something with Mickey Mouse. If retro gaming is your thing, then Nintendo's offerings are your Holy Grail.
Nintendo Press conference videoSony - I may be biased, but I thought this was a great presentation. Playstation Move, 3D support, and some exclusives were announced. Portal2 is coming to PS3, and Twisted FREAKIN Metal makes its long awaited return. Sony announced PS Plus, a pay service for additional content available thru PSN (called this awhile back

). The service will cost $49.99 a year, and give early access to demos, betas, games, themes, and more...standard PSN remains free. PS Move starter pack is $100.
GamesNeed for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Due 11/16/2010
From the maker of the Burnout series, this is a console version of the PC classic. Play as either the chaser (cop) or the chasee (criminal). Could be alot of fun with online friends.
http://www.youtube.com/v/w06n-ui79tM&hl=en_US&fs=1&Dead Space 2 . Due 1/25/2011
The sequel to its highly acclaimed predecessor, this looks like more of the same...alot more. I never played Dead Space but may pick it up if its a bargain, because this looks sweet.
http://www.youtube.com/v/qiBjEtqXttk&hl=en_US&fs=1&Medal of Honor. Due 10/12/2010
MOH series returns, and its no longer in WW2. This features a campaign by EA and online by DICE. Unless the beta reviews are awful, I think this will be a must have for FPS fans.
http://www.youtube.com/v/0cLv2_e9QoE&hl=en_US&fs=1&Bulletstorm. Due 2/22/2011
Never heard of this before today, but it looks pretty cool. Kind of reminds me of a Red Faction/Borderlands mix, and has crazy brutal effects. Could be a sleeper to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/v/4HfCqw_8iKo&hl=en_US&fs=1&Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam. TBA 2010
This was a real surprise...an expansion pack for BFBC2 based on the Vietnam War. New vehicles, weapons, maps, etc. If they sort out the server problems, i will own this for sure.
http://www.youtube.com/v/LiKlikkExcU&hl=en_US&fs=1&Crysis 2. Due Fall 2010 (Sept?)
I saw nothing today that changes my anticipation for this game. Graphics are amazing, and the gameplay looks solid. It was also announced that a 3D version of the game will be available...if you are one of the fortunate few that can afford a 3D monitor. Pray for an editor.
http://www.youtube.com/v/WWGrlI9kD0Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&Star Wars: The Old Republic. Due sometime in the future.
Ok this isn't a console game, but the trailer was incredible. If you like MMORPG than this will be a must have...the force is strong in this one.
http://www.youtube.com/v/Vx-WeKy9tH0&hl=en_US&fs=1&Assassins Creed: Brotherhood. Due 11/16/2010
One of the few bright spots. This expansion pack adds approx 15 hours of additional gameplay, as well as an online mode. Just more win for this epic series.
http://www.youtube.com/v/oVM558UI0y4&hl=en_US&fs=1&Shaun White Skateboarding. Due 4Q 2010
A cool looking game, but nothing earth shattering here. The skateboard games aren't as popular as the old TH games. I'll be shocked if this one is successful.
This video is long but shows just how awful the presentation was.
http://www.youtube.com/v/zyJuoiRWuXA&hl=en_US&fs=1&Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Due Q1 2011
If you area GR fan, this will be a must have. Campaign looks great and takes stealth to the next level. I really liked GRAW2, so its about time we get another one.
http://www.youtube.com/v/XXbeaWp_H-I&hl=en_US&fs=1&Child of Eden. Due Q1 2011
I don't even know how to describe this...they call it a fantasy shooter. I call it a light show. Utilizes the motion technology...how its a game I have no idea. Not my bag...
Driver San Francisco. Due Q4 2010
Finally, a good decision by Ubi. Driver was a favorite back in the PS1 days. So far it looks really good, although they have some 'teleport' thing I'm not sure about.
http://www.youtube.com/v/wPM_HOGnK0o&hl=en_US&fs=1&ManiaPlanet. Due 2011?
This is for PC thru the Uplay app. The only reason I mention it is because it actually allows some type of level creation for a shooter. Also has racetracks and RPG creation. It's based on the Trackmania success from what they said.
http://www.youtube.com/v/eJfkDzd5LAQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&Metal Gear Solid Rising. Due TBA
There's 3 things to know about this title. 1) 1st MGS game for 360. 2) Features Raiden, the gender challenged character from MGS Sons of Liberty and MGS4. 3) Hideo Kojima is not producing this game. If you can get past those 3 things, this may be the game for you. The game trailer is quite convincing for those on the fence...it's ginsu mania!
http://www.youtube.com/v/AtM3PGyiQUc&hl=en_US&fs=1&Call of Duty: Black Ops. Due 11/9/2010
Created by Treyarch (COD WAW), this installment takes place during the Cold War era. Not much to add here...except we seem to be running out of wars to host the COD series. I'm sure this will end up in my PS3 at some point.
http://www.youtube.com/v/9os5gXIzcEg&hl=en_US&fs=1&Fallout New Vegas. Due 10/19/2010
The next great game in the Fallout series, this games uses the Fallout 3 engine but seems a bit more colorful. Pip-Boy and V.A.T.S. are back...so veterans should feel right at home. Due to the short production time, very little has changed with the controls. The setting is obviously the Vegas area, but you do not start from birth like Fallout 3. I'm all in for this one.
http://www.youtube.com/v/7yizebU9ak4&hl=en_US&fs=1&Killzone 3. Due 2/2011
This game looks great. Supports 3D and Move technology. If the MP handles better and doesn't punish late comers as much, I will get this.
http://www.youtube.com/v/StBgTO5TPh0&hl=en_US&fs=1&Twisted Metal. Due 2011
TWISTED FREAKIN METAL!!! Let the games begin...
http://www.youtube.com/v/z6JQzmsdBmM&hl=en_US&fs=1&Gran Turismo 5. Due 11/2/2010
This looks incredible. Supports 3D
http://www.youtube.com/v/hxfNb4d3bPY&hl=en_US&fs=1&Portal 2. Due 2011Valve brings this popular Sci-fi shooter to PS3. Same story, just better. Gabe Newell said PS3 will have "the best console version of Portal 2".
http://www.youtube.com/v/zv9ilWdSX9Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&Complete list of PS3 games 2010
A few other non-PS3 titles:
- Gears of War 3 (360). Looks cool but not worth selling my soul.
- Halo: Reach (360). Looks cool but not worth selling my soul.
- Fable 3 (360). Looks cool but...well you get the point
- INNERGY (PC)...it's a finger pulse monitor like you would use in a Dr's office. Connects to a PC and has an interface to help you learn to breathe and relax....wtf?
- Your Shape Fitness Evolved (360)...its like Wii fitness using the motion device. A smash and grab title.
- Laser Tag (

) They demo'd laser tag...seriously, I'm not making this up! Hey Ubi, the 80's called and wants its game back.
- Michael Jackson dance game, although I'm not sure what its called...they never showed a title. It was just dancers, and it was awful.
