Let's continue the music discussion here, as it doesn't belong to the mapping section.

Jazz-Funk you say, have you heard of Bonobo and Jaga Jazzist?

I think you could say they are Jazz-Funk, I could be wrong, but I think they're awesome - especially Bonobo - thanks to yoz for recommending him to me Smiley

I've listened to a few tracks of both.

I wouldn't consider it as Jazz-Funk though, but more as an unconventional mix between Chillout, Funk and Electronica. It did not sound bad though.
(I did not listen to all of it, plus maybe I should listen to it when I'm sober)

Gonna name some of my favorites:

Down To The Bone - Funkin' Around
A crispy, funky mid-tempo funk/jazz mix with a great background funk guitar and some crunchy keyboard and saxophone solos in the middle.

Down To The Bone - Make It Funky
Some uptempo funk with a cool bass line and cool brass and guitar solos.

Maceo Parker - Uptown Up
This is one cool funk tune. 50% Jazz, 50% Funk. Great drum works, funky guitar playing, and of course funkin' awesome saxophone and trumpet solos. This even has a rap part in the end.

Jeff Golub - Cadillac Jack
Jazzy track with some horns, yet more guitar solos. I guess this one is indeed great for listening while driving.

Down To The Bone - Sound As A Pound
Dance funk track with cool piano parts.

Down To The Bone - Brooklyn Heights
Chilling, hypnotic, yet uptempo dance track with some really great piano parts.

Four80East - TKO
What can I say... this contains a cool bass line played by a contrabassist, a saxophone solo, a guitar solo and a keyboard solo, hell even an amusing intro with some nice sound effects. This track kinda makes me happier each time I listen to it.

Lee Ritenour - Boss City
This is actually not Funk. This is pure Jazz. Uptempo, yet this is something for the mind. Lee Ritenour is an awesome guitarist.

This is a great thread UD, I'm glad you brought it back to life  Wink

I wasn't sure if Bonobo or Jaga Jazzist was Jazz-Funk as such, but they sounded a bit jazzy and a bit funky to me lol, so....you know....I put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5  Grin ...I bow down to your better knowledge UD  Wink and yes I agree, more electronica than anything, although there is one track (I can't remember which now) has some really wild, awesome jazz flute that has to be heard to be believed - but that is just one track I think.

I'm always on the lookout for new sounds and you've given me some more inspiration, I will be sure to look up some (or all) of those tracks UD, thanks for recommending them Smiley

Btw, I hear that Jazz and alcohol mix very well  Tongue Grin

Thanks yoz, that's the one, it's truly 'out there' - it's almost too insanely lyrical brother  Grin Cheesy

And thanks again yoz for recommending Bonobo, I practically listen to nothing else now  Wink

Heavy funk + beer =  Grin
I should probably stop with that crap though, regarding I'm actually a health freak aside from a few things.

Each track I named up there is different, you can't compare them with each other (except maybe "Funkin' Around" and "Make it Funky", these tracks are a bit similar, they're on the same album). If you don't like one of them, you might like the other. No guarantee you will, though, as these are no common styles.

I've just listened to "Flutter" by Bonobo. Haven't found the amazing flute solo in there though. I heard a flute playing in the background, but it played the same tones over and over again.
Also, are there two versions of this song or what?

bonobo is more dj then anything else i think so there might be a few mixes around and thats wy i sounds so different from anything else..hard to put in a catogorie
and its not like a jazz solo where anything can happen during the solo...i like monotoom music so it appeals to me , espacialy after a long night 2 get back in relaxed state of mind... Lips Sealed Lips Sealed

glad 2 hear that bongo, i think it was in ssx tricky on the ps2 where i first discovered that song(snowboarding game) and 1 of my favorite artist 2...
i had a few years when i was obsessed whit game music and looked up a lot of the music that was used in games...killzone2 has a awesome intro song, i forgot his name..i know its a techno dj and that makes it even more awesome because he used a orchestra for the first time in his life....

Sorry guys, it seems I'm out of my depth with these musical matters, and I'm supposed to be a drummer lol

I guess I'm not experienced in jazz, so to me it sounded like jazz flute, but I hear you say "What would a drummer know about jazz?" lol....and you'd be right  Cheesy

Anyway, I will certainly be checking out those tunes UD, thanks again Smiley

@yoz, yeah, I got really into game music too, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Soundtrack is brilliant, written and produced by Amon Tobin, a Brazilian DJ and music artist who actually collaborated with Bonobo on one or maybe two tracks.
I also think Jesper Kyds dark, ambient tunes for the Hitman series of games is outstanding.

I'm listening to Bonobo now and I'm afraid I must correct you yoz  Wink the track 'Flutter' is a great track and one of my favorites, but that isn't the one I was thinking about before.

The track which features an almost vocal, flute style is called 'Pick Up' and it is from the album 'Dial "M" For Monkey' which is the same album that contains the track 'Flutter' incidentally. The whole track is essentially a long flute solo I would say, but then I'm not known for my music knowledge, all I know is I love it  Grin

Also UD I think you are correct about there being 2 versions of 'Flutter', there are two, short, linked tracks on the album 'Solid Steel Presents: It Came From The Sea' which are very similar to 'Flutter' in fact you could argue that they are indeed different versions of the same track.
The track 'Pick Up' also features on this album too, but with a long intro without the flute

Well, being unexperienced in a musical direction does not have anything to do with what instrument you play. A drummer can be more experienced in Jazz than a saxophonist, regardless of unbelievable that might sound.

Interest is what's required for experience in a certain music style, not the ability of playing a particular instrument.

As for me, I'm not experienced in any other music style than Funk and Jazz tbh; I'm pretty much focussed on them. If you ask me about other music styles, I'll most probably not know much, or maybe nothing at all.
But that's not 'cause I'm studying the saxophone and I'd HAVE to be focussed on Jazz and Funk, no, it's cause I'm not interested in any other.  Tongue

Well and as for "Flutter", I heard a short version and a long version before. The short version appeared to be strange to me. It had a flute in the background playing the same tones over and over again, while the other one had no flute at all, just synthesized brass if I remember right...

I find it as a relief that no one voted for pop.
You better have a damn good explanation if you're gonna listen to that audible trash.

LOL

For me, I've little to no clue about Funk or Jazz. I know I've heard some of it and enjoy it a lot.

I generally stick with Techno or, more frequently, it's sub-genre Trance. Man to I love trance. lol

not to into electronica as it's usually a lot closer to pop I think. If I'm correct, it's the stuff that sounds like old 80s video games and some singing that ends up making me go "GET OUT OF MY EARS!!" lol

Any particular artists? Or random stuff you heard by incident?

lol As for pop, I don't like that either. There are only very very few pop tracks that are good.

Well I've heard a few songs. Can't remember their names or artists though.

Might look up some one the stuff you posted.

But yeah, I'm generally no good with artists, I don't know any good funk artists, nor any good trance artists. (Most of the stuff has too much singing.)  I know Basshunter and Eiffel65... Music good, singing, bleh.

I usually just get a large bunch of tracks from newgrounds. It's all free and is made mostly by people at home. A bunch of different genres over there too.

I see, lol.

From the tracks I've posted up there, not a single one contains singing, they're all instrumentals.

DTTB's tracks are instrumentals in 95% of the cases. There's maximum one vocal track per album, which is not that disturbing. I deleted them though, lol. Their older albums contain no vocal tracks at all.

Then there's Four80East, an acid jazz band that combines Jazz and Funk, but even has Chillout elements in some of their tracks. Only very few of all them contain vocals.

Here's two of the tracks from above.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ7gL3vlsa8&fmt=18 - Cadillac Jack (low quality, haven't found anything better on youtube)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAoxUgQtfiU - TKO (average quality, best case)

I also found some DTTB tracks from several albums, but they got uploaded in such a horrible quality it's not worth posting here.

Here are parts of two live recordings of these guys though, in a decent quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bs5mvYkhhY&fmt=18 - Funkin' Around
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6NgcZF2zaE&fmt=18 - The Zodiac
